ABOUT US

WHY ZAMBIA

  • One of the highest orphan rates in the world — Over 1 million children have lost one or both parents, largely due to the AIDS crisis.

  • Widespread poverty and unemployment — Nearly 69% of Zambians are unemployed, with a very young population (median age 16.7) and a life expectancy of 51.

  • Unsafe living conditions — Many children live in overcrowded, one-room homes or makeshift shelters, leaving them vulnerable to hunger, abuse, and exploitation.

  • Child labor is common — Children often work crushing stones, selling produce, or collecting scrap metal to help their families survive.

  • Girls face greater barriers — Limited access to education severely restricts their future opportunities.

  • A clear call to Kafue — This underserved village has little infrastructure and only one overcrowded government school serving four communities.

HOW WE STARTED

Lisa Matranga first traveled to Zambia with her daughter on a mission trip to serve vulnerable children in Kafue. What began as a single trip became a lifelong calling. Year after year, Lisa returned to the same orphanage where they served—forming deep, lasting relationships with children and caregivers in the community. Over time, deep relationships were formed with children who came to know her as “Auntie Lisa.”

When the orphanage closed, one of those children—now an adult—reached out to her, asking for help for the next generation. It was a pivotal moment, and a reminder of a verse God had placed on Lisa’s heart years earlier: “They will call on me, and I will answer them.” (Psalm 91:15)

With trusted relationships already in place, local friends in Zambia helped identify children in need and secured a small rented building. In 2020, Lisa and Mike Matranga formally established Psalm 91 Ministry and began raising support in her home city—simply sharing photos of children and asking friends to sponsor a child. In 2021, Kafue Christian Academy opened with one teacher, one building, and 32 students—many of whom had never been in school. What started through relationship and obedience has grown into a Christ-centered work of education, care, and hope for vulnerable children and families.

OUR VISION

God has allowed Psalm 91 Ministry to grow beyond what we ever imagined. Today, we operate out of two rented buildings that are not connected, and we are at capacity. While these spaces have served us well, they limit how many children we can reach and how much more we can offer.

We are believing God for a permanent campus — a place with room to welcome more children, expand trade training, grow food, and create space for discipleship and community outreach. This vision isn’t just about buildings; It’s about making room for more lives to be changed. We trust in a big God who provides, and we are believing Him for the next step — so that more children and families in Zambia can experience hope, dignity, and the love of Christ.
